The Dravidian movement’s centenary and half-a-century of the the Dravidian parties’ rule, followed by veteran Tamil political leader M. Karunanidhi’s completion of 60 years as a legislator... these three occasions are important not only for Tamil Nadu but also for entire India. However, the national media as usual passed these occasions by without giving much importance to them. The editorial team of The Hindu Tamil could not do that.
Beyond all its shortcomings, the Dravidian movement has completed a huge task, especially on the social justice front. Besides being one of its leading generals, Karunanidhi has the distinction on being the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the longest tenure and a formidable leader of the Opposition. No leader except Karunanidhi has the history of being elected as a people’s representative in a democratic country for 60 continuous years, especially as the one who hails from a community oppressed in the caste-dominated politics of India.
Hence, we wondered why we could not bring out a book that speaks about his contribution on this important occasion. The result is this book. We have also highlighted the good changes that have happened under the rule of both the DMK and the AIADMK in the context of the Dravidian movement’s century.
